چکیده

We report negative-index imaging at near infrared wavelengths using a photonic crystal PC with an effective index matched closely to air as the incident medium. A tapered waveguide is used to generate a point-sourcelike object field; and to probe the focusing behavior of the PC, an array of 500 nm wide photonic wire waveguides is placed in the backplane of the PC lens. This represents a sampling of the image field at the rate of one data point per free space wavelength 0 . For TM polarization, a well-defined 1.7 0 spot is observed, while the TE polarization lies near the photonic band edge and exhibits spreading and low transmission. We also investigate the wavelength dependence and experimentally show the performance of the negative index lens as a function of frequency.

Role of the Lens Thickness and the Surface Termination in the Formation of Subwavelength Images by a Negative-Index Photonic-Crystal Slab

A two-dimensional photonic-crystal engineered to possess a refractive index equal to minus one at a certain frequency is used as a flat superlens. Subwavelength imaging (image size below half a wavelength) is observed both in the near-field and far-field regimes when the interface with air is properly terminated to support surface states with even

Numerical Analysis of Index-Guiding Photonic Crystal Fibers with Low Confinement Loss and Ultra-Flattened Dispersion by FDFD Method

In this article, perfectly matched layer (PML) for the boundary treatment and an efficient compact two dimensional finite-difference frequency-domain (2-D FDFD) method were combined to model photonic crystal fibers (PCF). For photonic crystal fibers, if we assume that the propagation constant along the propagation direction is fixed, three-dimensional hybrid guided modes can be calculated by us...

Highly Directive Radiation and Negative Refraction Using Photonic Crystals

In this article, we present an experimental and numerical study of certain optical properties of twodimensional dielectric photonic crystals (PCs). By modifying the band structure of a two-dimensional photonic crystal through its crystal parameters, we show how it is possible to confine the angular distribution of radiation from an embedded omnidirectional source. We then demonstrate that the a...

Design and simulation of a pressure sensor based on a two dimensional photonic crystal slab of PbMoO4

In this paper the design and three dimensions (3D) simulation of a photonic crystal (PC) pressure sensor is presented. The device is based on a 2D PC slab of PbMoO4. The simulations are based on finite element method (FEM) and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method and are done using CST STUDIO SUITE software. The sensitivity of the proposed sensor is calculated by considering the deformat...

Influence of the surface termination to the point imaging by a photonic crystal slab with negative refraction

Point imaging by a photonic crystal slab due to the negative refraction is studied theoretically. By investigating the transfer function of the imaging system, the influence of the surface termination to the imaging quality is analyzed. It is shown that an appropriate surface termination is important for obtaining an image of good quality. ∗Electronic address: [email protected]
